The Newport News Amateur Communications Team (NNACT) provides critical emergency amateur radio communications for the City of Newport News and the Virginia Peninsula. Operating as part of ARES/RACES of Virginia, District 5, our dedicated volunteers stand ready to support local government agencies when standard infrastructure fails.
When All Else Fails

During and after severe disasters, commercial phone lines go down, power grids fail, and cellular towers can be heavily damaged or overloaded. When conventional telephone, internet, and local government communications become inoperable, amateur radio remains a reliable lifeline. Our FCC-licensed volunteers maintain self-sustaining gear in their homes and vehicles to keep emergency channels open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
